    When I worked in Atlanta my job was to take the Bill Balance Show records - yes,vinyl LPs - to the bus station to be sent to the next station awaiting the delivery. I would pick up the set of LPs for the next week for us to broadcast. WIIN Atlanta, 970 daytimer.

    The one thing that makes me sad about San Diego is that it could not become a hub for world trade Mac in the 20s and 30s San Diego just got blown out of the water by Los Angeles crushed we had a chance to become a major major player and a major city and yet we became a secondary subdivision of our state and always will be

    I’ve lived in La Jolla for 20 years and even though that doesn’t make me a “long timer” by local standards, it’s changed even in the two decades that I’ve been here. It looks remarkably the same, but it’s far more oriented toward a very particular, kind of young athletic streamlined consumer, not someone interested in art or culture. You can still find those things, of course, but I’ve never seen so many gyms and personal trainers in a half mile radius. Thankfully Warwicks and DG Wills and the Athenaeum have all survived, though the Museum of Art is a shadow of its former self. More gallery space, but it feels like a nod to investors and art collectors more than it feels like a place for the community.

    Thank you for sharing this clip. Sea World was so beautiful back then. It has lost all its beauty and is now a mere facade of what it used to be. It is now cramped with rides, restaurants and cement. The beautiful waterway paved over and flamingos cramped in a small cage with a horrid loud ride roaring over them.

    I remember when North Park used to be an inexpensive place to live that was nice. For decades people that witnessed the flight 182 in '78 ( the worst in history prior to 9/11) didn't want to chance it happening again. I like North Park. I like th old house's. I don't like what they did on 30th street with the bike lanes. Between university and El Cajon Blvd EMTs can't get through there now.

    The first couple of seconds of this sounded really clear and I was amazed knowing this was AM radio but then it dropped to the sound you'd expect. Don't know what that's about but I loved KCBQ in those days. I had a cassette recorder and I taped the Q often to listen to my favorite songs. I remember the DJ playing the song Little Red Riding Hood by Sam the Sham and when it says "Who's that I see walking in these woods?" And the DJ says: "John Fox!" one of the other Jocks as a joke. Fox is still involved in local radio here in San Diego on Rez Radio with the immortal Jim McInnis Friday nights Vinyl Resting Place.

    Too bad La Jolla has no community events that would draw in the whole crowd (aside from the still very sentimental Christmas Parade). The 4th of July Fireworks at the Cove was the closest thing we had in the 1980-90s where for most of the day, the sidewalks, restaurants, taverns, were full of happy locals until it was time to congregate on the Scripps Park Grass. Then the Lawyers came in and said the residual chemical powders of the explosives would give the garibaldis thyroid cancer. Then the sea lions started to take advantage of the bluffs north of Boomers (which are now permanently Sea Lion Country) so the loud noises would disturb them. It was magnanimous that George Hauer underwrote the shows by himself for years with little help from other businesses. Yet, there are firework shows all up and along the coasts, rivers, bays, estuaries, lakes in all 50 states with out any garibaldi cancer!!!!! La Jollans need to reclaim their Independence and just have our Fireworks back and not tell the damn city or the lawyers. Even if that means renting mortar barges towed behind boats a little off shore.

    Czech composer Boruslav Martinu was commissioned by the then La Jolla Musical Arts Society to write a song in 1950. Sinfonietta La Jolla is charming work. It was preniered in New York (New York City??!!!!). Parts of it capture in my imagination a seagull soaring over the crashing waves in the first movement then you are above the crowded streets of the Village with the honking of the cars before rising above the western slope of Mount Soledad.... on a late Sunday afternoon with the junipers casting shadows on the white stucco homes..... The Bournemouth Orchestra 1995 has a good recording of it.

    Johnny's Waffle Shop in the Arcade building was there for years. But as longtime patrons of Harry's Coffee Shop, our family just never went there for breakfast. That is, until one weekend day in the 1980s, we got up early with the goal of finally eating at Johnny's Waffle Shop....and when we parked and got out right in front..... it had permanently closed the day before!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Our family, having learned their lesson, ate at Su Casa on their last day in the Fall of 2019. In the back room (and finally tried the flan!) I ate at Pernicano's the last night it was open a few weeks before that. (I had just walked into the very crowded dining room (which used to be very crowded growing up as a kid, and the daughter had announced that they had just made their LAST PIZZA as they had run out of pizza dough! (A friend was served the last pizza that night). So many birthdays and other family and sports team celebrations held there will always be close to our Family's heart. My Parents said that All Hallow's Church used to hold parish meetings there before the church construction was completed. I hope more La Jollans find their old Super-8 films in their attics and load them for all of us to enjoy. What a great film.

    What a real shame that the City of San Diego does this. If sold to the city, it could have been preserved and used as museum. What about the San Diego Historical Society ? Could they have not saved this historical home ? Way too many historical structures are being DESTROYED all in the vain pursuit of "progress". My guess is that the City will use State funds and local taxes to erect Socialized Housing, eight stories tall similar to the units that just went up in Mission Valley and La Mesa.

  • @christopher5585
    @christopher5585 Рік тому

    Sad. Unless the structure was compromised, what reason was there to demolish another historical building ?

    The Founders of the Maytime Band Review wanted an event to rival the All Western Band Review, which was the largest Review in the Western United States. Like All Western, there were a total of about 100 entrants, but due to the time required to undertake such an event of this size, the number was reduced over the decades to about 50 total. Many schools participated from all over Southern California and even as far as Northern California. Kimball Field (Park) was FILLED to capacity with more students and parents standing and sitting in the baseball diamond and outfield areas during the Awards Ceremony. Also, Maytime was such a HUGE popular event that it's reputation reached Hollywood as during the 1960's, Grand Marshals were actually Pop Stars like drummer and singer; Micky Dolanz of the Monkees.
